Ananthapura Lake Temple
Ananthapura Lake Temple is one of the most unique and famous temples in Kasaragod district. Situated in the middle of a beautiful freshwater lake, it is regarded as the only lake temple in Kerala. The ancient temple is traditionally believed to be the moolasthanam (original abode) of Lord Ananthapadmanabha, the deity of the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is depicted seated on the five-hooded serpent king Anantha. The temple is particularly admired for its traditional Kerala architecture and beautiful wooden carvings depicting stories from the Dashavatara, the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Paintings of the Navagrahas can also be seen within the temple complex.
The temple stands within a lake measuring approximately 302 feet by 302 feet, with a footbridge providing access to the shrine. Its peaceful surroundings, reflections in the lake, traditional architecture, and spiritual atmosphere make it an important pilgrimage and tourism destination in Kasaragod.
The temple is also associated with the famous legend of Babia, a vegetarian crocodile that was regarded as the guardian of the temple lake. Babia died in 2022, and the story remains an important part of the temple’s cultural folklore.
