Government College

Government College, Manjeshwar—officially Govinda Pai Memorial Government College (GPMGC)—is a public arts and science college in Hosabettu, Manjeshwar, Kasaragod district, Kerala. Established in 1980 and affiliated with Kannur University, it serves students from northern Kerala and the Karnataka border region, with undergraduate and postgraduate programs across arts, commerce, statistics, economics, and tourism.

History and identity

The college is named after Rashtrakavi Manjeshwar Govinda Pai (1883–1963), a renowned Kannada poet, scholar, and humanist. It was inaugurated on 22 September 1980 and initially operated from temporary premises before moving to its present 32-acre campus in Hosabettu in 1990. Its location near the Kerala–Karnataka border reflects its longstanding role in serving a linguistically and culturally diverse community.

Academic programs

The institution offers undergraduate programs including BA Kannada, B.Com, B.Sc. Statistics, and Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management, along with postgraduate degrees such as M.Com, M.Sc. Statistics, and Master of Travel and Tourism Management. The college is affiliated with Kannur University, and its tourism and statistics offerings are among its distinctive academic strengths.

Campus and development

The Hosabettu campus lies about 20 km south of Mangaluru and 28 km north of Kasaragod, with Manjeshwar railway station nearby. In recent years, the college has expanded its infrastructure with a Silver Jubilee academic block, implemented Kerala’s Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), and participated in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) process for the first time.

Recognition

The college is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a B grade and is recognized by Kerala’s Directorate of Collegiate Education as a government arts and science college. It continues to function as an important higher education institution for the Kasaragod region, particularly for students from border communities where Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu, and Konkani are widely spoken.
